Mincap presents the first results of the exploratory study characterising the publishing market 2019–2024

In addition to characterising the publishing sector, the study sought to identify the catalogue of active titles, as an information base to support the promotion of the Chilean publishing industry, facilitate decision-making and simplify the dissemination of the catalogue.
With representatives of the main trade associations of the ecosystem – Editoriales de Chile, the Corporación del Libro y la Lectura, the Cámara Chilena del Libro, graphic narrative cooperatives, Librerías Interdependientes de Chile (Linc), rights agencies and institutional representatives – the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage presented the results of the characterisation of the publishing market 2019–2024, a study commissioned by the Executive Secretariat for Books from the agency Fidelia as one of the key actions to strengthen the publishing ecosystem on the road to Frankfurt 2027.

The study identified 666 publishers in the national ISBN registry, covering 55.6% of the publishers registered there. It also concludes that there is a wide dispersion of publishers, with a strong concentration of output in the segment of up to 50 titles (more than 65%). A small group of high-output publishers has a significant impact on the market, revealing inequalities in the scale of operations.

After the results were presented, the panel discussion “How do we plan the continuous characterisation of the publishing sector?” took place with Vicente Neira, representative of the Observatorio del Libro y la Lectura of the Universidad de Chile; Gabriela Villalba, vice-president of LINC; and Enrique Riobó, head of the Studies Department of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage. They discussed the main difficulties the sector faces in collecting data on an ongoing basis and the future of collaborative work between the private sector and state institutions, with the aim of continuing to professionalise the book and reading ecosystem.
